- Allah the almighty says:
Verily We, It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption).
- Surah al-Hijr 15:9
- Hence, Allah guaranteed the preservation of the Quran. He entrusted his Prohet with the task to explain the Quran as He says:
And We have also sent down unto you (O Muhammad) the reminder and the advice (the Quran), that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought.
- Surah an-Nahl 16:44
- and He also says:
And We have not sent down the Book (the Quran) to you (O Muhammad), except that you may explain clearly unto them those things in which they differ, and (as) a guidance and a mercy for a folk who believe. ”
- Surah an-Nahl 16:64
- So the Messenger fulfilled this task to the fullest, such that he explained the details of what mentioned generally, restricted an specified the unrestricted, interpreted the words, elaborated on the rulings and meanings, and this commentary from him is what we have today as his Sunnah.
- Since this commentary from him serves as an explanation to the Quran, he was indeed inspired by Allah and his Sunnah too was part of the Revelation from Allah the Exalted the Most High:
Nor does he (Muhammad) speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired.
- Surah a-Najm 53:3-4
- Ibn Hazm (d. 456 AH) said:
Allah informs that the words or sayings of His Prophet all were an Inspiration and Inspiration is, without dispute, a Reminder (Dhikr) and The Reminder (Dhikr) is safeguarded preserved as stated in the Quran. Therefore, truly, his sayings have been preserved and safeguarded by Allah’s Protection, guaranteed to us that nothing will escape or go missing because whatever is safeguarded and preserved by Allah, for certain, there is no way it can go missing and every single one surely reaches us.
- al-Ihkam fee Usool al-Ahkam: 1/95
“ Al-Dhikr ” - The Reminder - is a diction which encompasses all that Allah has revealed or inspired to His Apostle, whether the Quran or the sunnah
- al-Ihkam fee Usool al-Ahkam: 1/115
- Ibn al-Qayyim ( d. 751 AH ) said:
Thus, it is known that the words of the Messenger in all matters of the Deen ( religious matter s) were inspiration from Allah and every inspiration ( wahyun ) from Allah is “ Dhikr - a Reminder which Allah revealed, as He the Exalted says: {Allah has sent down to you the Book ( The Quran ), and Al-Hikmah ( Islamic laws, knowledge of legal and illegal things i.e. the Prophet’s Sunnah - legal ways )...Surah al-Nisa’ 4:113}
- al-Kitab is the Quran and al Hikmah is the Sunnah and indeed the Prophet said:
{Verily, I’ve been granted al-Kitab and a similar to it together with it ...} and so he informed us that he has been granted with the Sunnah together with al-Kitab and Allah has guaranteed the preservation of all that He inspired and revealed to him as a proof against the servants of Allah which stands until the end of time.
- Muktasar al-Sawa’iq al-Mursalah: 2/371
As a conclusion, Inspiration (wahyun) which was revealed is of 2 categories:
Revelation which is a form of ritual recitation and an unchallenged miracle beyond mankind’s ability to produce the like of it and this is the Quran.
Revelation which has been transmitted and not in the form of an unchallenged miraculous Word of Allah and not meant as a ritual recitation but to be read and studied and this is the Sunnah.
ATHAR’s mission is to provide means for the Preserved Safeguarded Sunnah to be easily accessible, readable, appreciated, correctly understood and practised.
